The Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra (DPO) is based in Daejeon, Republic of Korea. Dedicated to enriching lives through orchestral experiences, the DPO presents a wide range of repertories from symphonies to chamber music. In May 2023, Jakyung Year was appointed Artistic Director & Principal Conductor, becoming the 9th person to hold the title.

The DPO performs around 80 times annually, offering captivating experiences through various series. The ‘Masters Series’ features collaborations with world-renowned musicians, the ‘Discovery Series’ explores interesting musical themes, and the ‘Chamber Series’ highlights delicate chamber music. The ‘Matinee Concert’ provides peaceful musical experiences with commentaries, while the ‘DPO Close-Up’ delivers performances in close proximity to the musicians. The 'Outreach Concert' promotes inclusivity by bringing music to all corners of the city.

The DPO has an international presence, touring the United States in 2004 and performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall. They represented Korea at the 'Asian Orchestra Week' in Tokyo and Osaka in 2005 and 2015, and toured Europe in 2012, becoming the first Korean municipal orchestra to perform at Musikverein in Vienna, as well as in Prague, Budapest, and Munich.

JAKYUNG YEAR is a highly acclaimed conductor known for her distinctive and highly sensitive baton technique, as well as her authentic music interpretation.

Since her debut with the Wien Radio Symphony Orchestra, YEAR has performed extensively in Europe and Asia, collaborating with prestigious orchestras such as the Orchestre National de France, Paris Lyon National Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, the KBS Symphony Orchestra, Korean National Symphony Orchestra, Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra, Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra, Daegu Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra, and Busan Philharmonic Orchestra. She also regularly appears at concerts hosted by the Seoul Arts Center and presses.

Dedicated to making classical music accessible to all, YEAR shares the hidden gateway of classical music in her book 『Behind the Classic』 and engages with audiences in various forms, such as serving as a commentator in one of the Seoul Arts Center’s renowned 『Saturday Concert』. In 2023, she received the Nanpa Music Award in recognition of her contribution to expanding the reach of classical music.

After studying composition and conducting at Hanyang University, YEAR pursued further studies in Austria at prestigious Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien under Leopold HAGER, former Music Director of Wien Volks Oper.

YEAR served as an Artistic Director&Principal Conductor of Gangnam Symphony Orchestra. In May 2023, she was appointed as the Artistic Director&Principal Conductor of Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra.

SUMI HWANG was seen by a global audience when she gave a soaring rendition of the Olympic Anthem at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018. The New York Times praised the Korean soprano as 'arguably the star of the night'.

Following undergraduate and graduate degrees at Seoul National University, Hwang attended the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich and also participated in masterclasses with Helmut Deutsch, Siegfried Mauser, Andreas Schmidt, Dalton Baldwin and Lorraine Nubar.

Her numerous competition successes include the 1st Prize and Audience Prize at the International GRANDI VOCI Competition in Salzburg in 2012, 1st Prize in the Anneliese Rothenberger Competition in Konstanz in 2013 and the 2014 Emmerich Smola Förderpreis presented by the German TV network SWR. In 2014, Hwang won the first prize in the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.

Sumi joined the ensemble of the Theater Bonn for four years since 2014 following her victory that year in the Queen Elisabeth Competition. Since then, she had her role debuts of Micaëla in Carmen, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, reprising further the role of Liù in Puccini’s Turandot. Additionally, Sumi built up a large and diverse repertoire of roles in many operas including Die Zauberflöte, Rinaldo, Les pêcheurs de perles, Così fan tutte, Fidelio, La Bohéme and Giulio Cesare in Egitto. She has also sung a lead role in a contemporary opera - Lena in Vom Mädchen, das nicht schlafen wollte by Marius Felix Lange - and gave her debut at the Wiener Kammeroper as Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte under the baton of Stefan Vladar. The young artist is also becoming increasingly known to opera audiences across Europe and beyond, giving her debut at the Grand Théâtre de Genève as Pamina, singing Norina in Donizetti’s I pazzi per progetto at the Munich Prinzregententheater in 2012 and the Princess in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges at the Korean National Opera. She also appears regularly as a soloist on the concert podium and has sung in Antonín Dvořák's Requiem in Munich's Herkulessaal, Johannes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem with the Munich Symphony Orchestra, selected concert arias by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sakari Oramo, among others, Mozart's Requiem with the Netherlands Radio Orchestra conducted by Markus Stenz at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Christian Jost's Dichterliebe recomposed at the Tongyeong International Music Festival and with the Staatsorchester Saarbrücken, as well as Unsuk Chin's solo piece for soprano and orchestra Puzzles and Games from Alice in Wonderland premiered in 2017 under Christoph Eschenbach.

JUSUNG GABRIEL PARK is a South Korean bass-baritone, who was the Third Prize winner at Operalia 2021 and in the same year, represented his country at BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. In Korea, he won numerous competitions, including Third Prize at the Schubert Lied competition and Silver Prize at The Korea National Opera Competition. He is a current member of the Wiener Staatsoper Opernstudio for the 2022/23 and2023/24 seasons.

In 2021, Jusung took part in The Académie du Festival Aix-en-Provence and the International Meistersinger Akademie (IMA) under the guidance of Edith Wiens.

Jusung also has a special affinity with Lied and Oratorio repertoire. In 2021, he sang in a recording of Liederabend for the Bayerischer Rundfunk and appeared as a principal artist in Chuncheon International Early Music Festival, where he sang Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben.

Recent and forthcoming engagements include singing the title role in Mendelssohn’s Elias with the Bayerischen Rundfunk Chor & Orchestra; singing a Liederabend in Festwochen Gmunden with pianist Helmut Deutsch; Fenicio Ermione and Idraote Armida with the Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad, where he was awarded the International Bel Canto Prize; the title role in Le nozze di Figaro and Leporello Don Giovanni at Theater Rudolstadt in collaboration with Thüringer Symphoniker Orchestra; and performing in an Opera Gala Concert with the Nürnberg Symphoniker.

He was the bass soloist in Johannes Passion at the Myeongdong Catholic Cathedral and Yonsei University.

He regularly performed at Luce Chapel Yonsei, where he was the soloist in Christen ätzet diesen tag, Dvorak’s Mass in D, Weihnachtsoratorium and Faure’s Requiem.

Jusung studied voice at the Yonsei University and mdw, under the tutelage of Chang-gon Kim, Kwang-dong Kim, Hei-kyung Hong, Florian Boesch and Margit Klaushofer.
